Welcome to Pembridge Poultry

Purebred poultry in Herefordshire. Selling hatching eggs to point of lay hens.

We, in line with a lot of other breeders, have had a pretty slow start to our breeding season. Firstly we had to contend with Avian Flu lock down and then some less than helpful weather conditions. We are now hatching every week trying to build up our pullet numbers.

This year we have added Indian Runner Ducks to our range. We have got 3 Drakes (1 white, 1blue and 1 brown and white) so we are able to breed a really interesting mix of colours. Our 5 ducks are extremely good layers and anyone who hasn't had a sponge cake made with duck eggs has missed out on one of life's little luxuries.

FOR SALE.

I have got a small selection of quality cockerels for sale, including Cuckoo Marans, Cream legbars. These have been carefully selected and I would be happy to use any of them on my own hens.

2021

The demand for purebred poultry over the past year has been quite extraordinary. I am sorry that I was unable to supply many of the people who contacted me last autumn.

Due to having to shut the birds in hatching eggs will not be available until the end of January.

Feeding and Housing

Much has been written about the feeding and housing of poultry. A quality feed is essential together with access to grit to get the best out of your laying hens. Most household waste is unsuitable but green vegetables are particularly good in winter months when the grass has stopped growing.  It is best to avoid giving them fatty glutenous products, and too much bread is not good for hens.

The breeding hens at Lower Brockaly run in large grass pens and live in dry airy houses with plenty of room.  From time to time I rotate sheep round the pens to act as lawnmowers, and keep the grass short and thick.  Most of the nestboxes are plastic to help reduce red mite, but nevertheless a continual program of red mite control is carried out

All young stock are reared with access to extensive runs giving them plenty of grass and allowing them to forage so they grow up naturally.
