The Wyandotte was developed in the USA in the early 1870’s, and admitted to the poultry standards in 1883. They are a soft feather heavy breed and although they look large owing to their profuse feathering they are only a medium-sized breed. There are eight colours recognised by the American Poultry Association but the Silver-Laced is the base from which all the other colours were developed. They are an extremely docile and friendly breed and with their white and black tipped  lacing, their rosecombs and their yellow legs it is no wonder that they are in such demand. They are not quite as productive as the other breeds I keep but will lay between 180 and 200 eggs per year and have the added advantage that they make very good setters.

I managed to get hold of four birds from two top flocks in Yorkshire and a cockerel from one of the very best breeders in the home counties so I am very much looking forward to the result and as I write the first chick have just hatched.
